I only have an iron and not an actual board and need to iron a dress shirt. Is there anything else you can use an iron on with your clothes besides an ironing board?

What do you put in your hair prior to straight ironing to prevent damage and breakage?

I really want to straight iron my hair. I have a cheap one, and the last time I tried it, my hair got absolutely FRIED! But I hadn't put anything it it before I started ironing it.

So what do you put in it to prevent that? Or at least limit it? I saw something on an infomercial once.
