How to iron without an ironing board, without leaving marks on the back?

I need to iron a hakama (google it) to press all the pleats back in, but I don't have an ironing board. Is it safe to iron on a table or the vinyl floor? What can I put underneath it that won't transfer the shape, like if I put a terrycloth towel underneath, won't it press the pattern into the back, instead of a perfectly smooth surface? Also, what kind of material should I put on top so that the iron doesn't leave the surface "shiny"?
