like for cotton heavy weight irons are required but why?

Because heavy fabrics have a tendency to retain their wrinkles, even though “wrinkles” in certain cotton fabrics can be either fine wrinkles or large warps in denim for example.
Synthetics like polyester and modal, normally don’t need ironing, because the flaws in the weave of the fabric, do not exist. They are designed to not be wrinkly.
Natural Fabrics like cotton or wool, need to be reinforced because its in the weave of the fibers.
