What do you put in your hair prior to straight ironing to prevent damage and breakage?

I really want to straight iron my hair. I have a cheap one, and the last time I tried it, my hair got absolutely FRIED! But I hadn't put anything it it before I started ironing it.
So what do you put in it to prevent that? Or at least limit it? I saw something on an infomercial once.
